Lilla Sverige i Japan
Little Sweden In Japan
We created a new guest room with Swedish atmosphere from two small room in Japan. Our focus is on providing a feeling of relaxation, like having a little trip to Sweden for people who use this room. We got inspired from 60-70s Swedish interior and Swedish nature.

(before)
There were two children rooms. After two kids became adults, these rooms were used as just storages.

Since darkness of most of the year is present in swedish lives, an effective use of natural light becomes essential. Having open spaces with bright colors helps light to reflect and create a uplifting yet a relaxing atmosphere. We thus created this room spaciously and comfortably with some strong colors.

An important factor in the room is the use of textile. We chose textile frames instead of regular photographs to create a warm feeling. Several shades of green color and different patterns of birds and flowers in the textile of this room amplify the closeness of nature similar to swedish life.

Even small details make atmosphere of room. We decorated a shelf of the room with antique and Typical Nordic goods which have strong colors and Swedish smell.

Removing the wall between the two rooms and replacing one door in instead of two presented us a problem. It left a floor without wood in the shape of an arrow. The problem however turned to be a possibility. We decorated the space with mosaic ceramic tiles to bring a welcome feeling to enter "little Sweden".

Every goods in this room has a history to tell. We visited many antique and second hands shops in Sweden and acquired many beautiful things like lamps, handwoven rugs, textiles, vase, water pad, and so on. At these shops it isn't easy and takes time to find items that really mach with our image, but we put effort to find these goods which we really want to use for the room and enjoyed the hunting. Because of we want to present to japanese how Swedish yield beautiful work and have preserved through the generations.
